Interior Inspiration: Colour trends for 2018 every home owner should know

Every year new trends arise in the world of interior design and 2018 is set to be a pretty big year from all accounts! In Northland, we’re blessed with a gorgeous rural or coastal backdrop – depending where you live you may even have both! While they are stunning themes for your home, there’s nothing like a little spruce up with some colour. We’re here to help so your home can be chic and stylish and very on-trend all through the year. Here’s some of our favourite colours for 2018…

Pantone Colour of the Year: Ultra Violet

It has been a while since purple was a colour of the moment, but according to the legendary colour philosophers at Pantone, 2018 is the year of purple. They named Ultra Violet their colour of the year and said, “Historically, there has been a mystical or spiritual quality attached to Ultra Violet. The color is often associated with mindfulness practices, which offer a higher ground to those seeking refuge from today’s over-stimulated world. The use of purple-toned lighting in meditation spaces and other gathering places energizes the communities that gather there and inspire connection.” It’s a nice philosophy given the manic, fast-paced world we live in today so we are really loving this change up. Try pairing it with crisp white to create a serene space or diving into deep aqua jewel tones to give a space a little bit of opulence.

Resene Trend Watch: Deep & Dark Colours

Resene, our favourite national paint experts have said one of the major trends for 2018 are deep tones to cocoon and envelope a space making it feel warm and cosy. They said, “Deep light-absorbing colours offer cave-like cocoons to hide in when the world gets too scary. Creating places of introspection and security, these deep charcoals, moody blues and dense greens ground us but also inject a sense of daring at using such bold tones. It’s safe but not predictable. These colours are soulful and intimate yet bring a hint of drama.” Freshen the space up by pairing it with fresh greenery and some chrome accents to spice it up.

Graham & Brown’s Colour of the Year: Penelope

Pink has been all the rage for some time now and the color and wallpaper experts at Graham & Brown have identified this light pink paint shade as "one step ahead of the millennial pink phenomenon." They say Penelope adds a level of sophistication that catapults pink shades into 2018. It is so soft and light that it could add a slight touch of personality to an otherwise neutral and minimal space or it can offset bold and bright colours with similar undertones like plum or deep reds.

Dulux’s Trends for 2018: Neutrals & Rich Warm Tones – ‘Kinship’

Dulux has featured an unusual pairing in their colour trends for 2018 and we love, love, love it! It pairs rich warm tones like terracotta, muddy reds and oranges with deep grey, verging on brown neutrals. When describing their preferred colour palette for 2018 they said, “It’s a colour palette that exudes warmth – mixing earthy hues with cosy neutral shades. The pairing celebrates cultural heritage with fresh, contemporary overtures.” We love this as a warm combination for living or outdoor spaces as it can create an interesting and detailed focal point for the home.
